I actually know of an incident where that really happened. A friend of a guy I once worked with had built a Heath stereo amplifier. Upon completion he applied power to it and it didn't work. He did throw it out the window! Sometimes that can be taken literally. :D

When testing an audio amplifier, check the output terminal board for shorts. It only takes one strand of wire to cause a short, which will load down the output transformer. Solid state amps are much less forgiving of that!

The tubes in push-pull output stages should match fairly closely in resting current for best results. Besides causing distortion, some amplifiers will hum if the output tubes are severely unbalanced. Many professional and high end amplifiers had current meters or metering jacks for checking the tubes; otherwise, a tube tester is required. Amplifiers with D.C. bias or balancing adjustments should be set up as per the service literature.
